Two Minute Tips

Understanding Thermal Image Resolution

When it comes to thermal image quality, resolution plays a very important role. Here are some key points related to resolution in infrared cameras:

1. Pixel Resolution:

  •  Infrared cameras come in different resolutions, typically categorized as
    low, medium, and high:
  • Low Resolution: ≤ 160×120 (19,600 pixels)
  • Medium Resolution: 320×240 (76,800 pixels)
  • High Resolution: 640×480 (307,200 pixels)
  • The choice of resolution depends on your application and the
importance you place on image quality.
  • Higher resolution provides better image detail and allows for zooming
    without sacrificing quality.

2. Object Distance and Spot Size:

  • The spot size detected by an infrared camera depends on both the
camera’s resolution and the distance from the target.
  • The formula for spot size is:
  • Distance: How far you are from the object.
  • IFOV (Instantaneous Field of View): The spatial resolution
value of your thermal imager in radians.

3. IFOV (Instantaneous Field of View)

  •  IFOV represents the angular size of a single pixel in your infrared
    camera’s detector array.
  • It defines the smallest angle over which your camera can resolve
    temperature differences.
  • To calculate IFOV, use the following formula:
  •  FOV: The total angular field of view covered by the camera.
  • Number of Pixels: The total number of pixels in the camera’s array.
  • IFOV determines how finely your camera samples the scene.
  • Smaller IFOV values mean higher spatial resolution (finer detail) but
may require closer proximity to the object.
  • Larger IFOV values sacrifice detail for wider coverage.

4. Zoom Capability:

  • High-resolution cameras allow you to zoom into scenes while
    maintaining image quality.
